How the job runs

How we approach structural and plastering work

Four stages, in this order, because running them out of order is what causes finished work to be partly undone later.

  1. We establish what the wall is doing

Whether a wall is load bearing changes the job entirely. That gets established properly, not guessed, before any price is given.

  2. Calculations and building control where needed

Removing a load bearing wall needs a structural engineer's calculation for the beam and notification to building control. We arrange it and make sure it is signed off.

  3. Prop, cut, support

The structure above is supported before anything is removed, the beam goes in on properly sized padstones, and the props come out only once it is carrying.

  4. Board, skim and make good

Boarded, taped, skimmed flat and left ready for decoration, including the ceiling line and the junctions where the old wall used to be.

FAQ

Plastering & Structural Work: common questions

The questions people ask most before booking structural and plastering work.

Not from tapping it. It depends on what sits above, which way the joists run and what is in the foundations. We check it properly on site, and where there is any doubt a structural engineer confirms it. Taking out a load bearing wall without support is dangerous and will fail at sale.
