Four stages, in this order, because running them out of order is what causes finished work to be partly undone later.
The base done properly
Dug out to the right depth and built up on a compacted sub-base, because a slab laid on soft ground is the one that lifts and rocks within a year.
Levels and falls set right
Surfaces laid to fall away from the house and drain where they should, so you are not left with standing water after every shower.
Clean, square finishes
Cuts, edges and jointing done neatly, so paving, steps and walls line up and the detail holds up close to.
Cleared up at the end
Spoil and offcuts taken away, the area swept, and the site handed back usable rather than buried in rubble.
